What did I do as a Barista?
As a Barista, I skillfully brewed coffee, served food, and maintained equipment, while also contributing to a positive customer atmosphere through personalized service and innovative beverage creation at the Banyan Cafe in Saint Petersburg FL.
What did I take away from the job?
During my tenure as a barista, I garnered more insights about people and life than about coffee itself. Before stepping into the service industry, I scarcely considered the personal lives of those from whom I ordered food. Questions about their home life, their tenure in their job, or their personal challenges were absent from my thoughts. However, my experience as a barista profoundly altered this perspective.
Throughout my time in the role, I grappled with exhausting days, unpredictable coworkers, and encounters with disgruntled customers. I also faced the heart-wrenching duty of asking homeless individuals to leave, sometimes under the threat of police intervention. These experiences sculpted me into a stronger yet compassionate individual.
Today, my interactions with service workers are characterized by a heightened sense of appreciation. I now understand that, regardless of appearances, most people are indeed striving to do their best. This realization, born from my time as a barista, now informs my every interaction and deepens my empathy towards those in service roles.
