What did I do as Staff Director?
My job consisted of leading worships, setting up large scale games and events, public speaking, and management of a team of over a dozen counselors at Camp Rockmont in Black Mountain NC.
What did I take away from the job?
One of the most profound experiences of my life unfolded during my tenure at this particular job. It was our practice that every fortnight, we would host an event known as the "evening watch". This was a momentous occasion when our entire camp would come together to share in song and worship. Each evening watch, one director was selected to deliver a potent address known as "the word."
In one such session, a mere 24 hours before the evening watch, my superior approached me with the unexpected news that I had been chosen for this daunting responsibility. The announcement sent a rush of nerves through me, my stomach churning with apprehension. The weight of the task was not lost on me: I was to inspire and move an audience of over 300 people, and I had less than a day to prepare. I doubted my ability to rise to the occasion.
However, my boss, along with a handful of supportive friends, rallied behind me, bolstering my confidence with their encouraging words. Their faith in me was the spark I needed to accept the challenge wholeheartedly. That night, I found myself immersed in the task of crafting my speech, consumed by the task at hand.
The following morning brought with it a wave of uncertainty. I re-read my hastily-prepared speech with skepticism, doubting its efficacy. Yet, when I presented it to my boss, his enthusiastic applause provided a much-needed boost to my courage.
The long-anticipated evening finally arrived. With a deep breath and a determined heart, I delivered my speech. To my astonishment, it was flawless. It was a feat I had never achieved before, especially not in front of an audience exceeding 300 individuals.
This poignant experience taught me a valuable lesson: we are capable of far more than we imagine, especially when bolstered by a touch of encouragement from those who believe in us.
